"My heart is for the Church, to faithfully preach Christ, make disciples, and build up the body in the knowledge and grace of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ."
THE MAN AND HIS MINISTRY
Pastor, Theologian, and Founder of Faithful to the Word
I am Dr. Joshua Nichols, a pastor, theologian, author, and the founder of Faithful to the Word. My life and ministry are devoted to one primary calling: to faithfully proclaim the Word of God, exalt Jesus Christ, and equip the church to stand firmly upon the truth of Scripture. Whether through preaching, teaching, writing, or personal discipleship, my deepest desire is that God's people would grow in theological depth, spiritual maturity, and joyful obedience to Christ.
Though my academic formation has been extensive, earning doctorates in theology, philosophy, and ministry, I am the first to confess that for all the degrees, the true power of ministry does not lie in human wisdom. It lies solely in Christ crucified and risen. My greatest joy is simply to open the Scriptures, unfold their riches, and walk alongside God's people as a fellow pilgrim pressing toward the heavenly prize.

A teaching and writing ministry bridging the academy and the local church.
MARRIED SINCE 1996
To my esteemed wife, Genea, my one and only, you are undeniably my greatest blessing and a source of profound joy in my life.
FAMILY
I have been blessed with a wonderful family, which includes five amazing children and one grandchild.
THE DECISIVE MOMENT
Conversion, Growth, and Early Formation
The most decisive moment of my life occurred on April 3, 1990, when the Lord graciously saved me through faith in Jesus Christ alone. On that day, I came to see the depth of my sin and the sufficiency of Christ's atoning work, and I trusted fully in Him for salvation (Ephesians 2:8–9). It was not a dramatic conversion accompanied by striking external circumstances, but it was utterly real: the eyes of the heart were opened, and the One who had been unseen became undeniably present.
On April 22, 1990, I publicly professed that faith through believer's baptism at Fellowship Baptist Church in Longview, Texas, under the pastoral leadership of Wayne Goodman, alongside Youth Pastor Randy Young. That local church played a vital and formative role in grounding me in the authority of Scripture and the ordinary means of grace, a debt I carry with gratitude to this day.
In the years following my conversion, I did not experience an immediate call to preach or vocational ministry. Rather, I grew as many young Christians do: attending church faithfully, participating in summer camps, learning the Scriptures, and maturing both physically and spiritually. Those years were often quiet, marked by steady growth rather than dramatic direction. In hindsight, I now see the Lord patiently shaping foundations that would bear extraordinary fruit in the years to come.
A DEFINING QUESTION
Wrestling with Truth and the Birth of Theological Passion
Around 2005, a significant shift occurred in my life, not in what I believed, but in my burning desire to understand why I believed it. That turning point came through a question posed by Dale Tackett in Focus on the Family's teaching series, The Truth Project:
The question that changed everything
"Do you really believe that what you believe is really real?"
Dr. Dale Tackett — The Truth Project
That question lodged deeply in my soul. It compelled me to examine the foundations of my faith, not skeptically, but reverently. I began to pursue theology in earnest, seeking to understand the coherence, beauty, and truthfulness of the Christian worldview as revealed in Scripture. This was not academic ambition. It was devotion: loving God with my mind (Matthew 22:37), and discovering that the pursuit of truth about God is one of the most worshipful acts a human being can offer.
This pursuit was not initially driven by aspirations toward ministry, credentials, or the pulpit. It was driven by conviction: truth matters because God is true (Romans 3:4). Theology became for me not a career but an act of worship, the grateful, rigorous, joyful labor of a redeemed mind turning toward the God who made it.
THE PATH TO MINISTRY
From Theology to Calling — Licensing and Ordination
Only after completing my Master of Theology did I begin to sense a call to ministry, not initially to preach, but to teach others and make disciples, in obedience to Christ's command. This calling emerged gradually and humbly, confirmed through sustained prayer, the counsel of godly men, and the affirmation of the local church. Academic study did not create my calling; it clarified it. Theology sharpened my understanding of Scripture, and Scripture clarified my responsibility to teach others faithfully.

TEACHING AND WRITING
Faithful to the Word: Bridging the Academy and the Pew
Faithful to the Word exists to serve the church through biblical clarity, theological depth, and pastoral faithfulness. The conviction at the heart of this ministry is that theology belongs to the church, not just to the classroom. The great doctrines of the Christian faith were never meant to live in academic journals or seminary syllabi alone; they were meant to strengthen the faith of the widow, steady the young man under temptation, anchor the pastor in the pulpit, and fill the Sunday School classroom with living truth.
Through this ministry I write and teach so that believers might grow in their understanding of God's Word, not merely to accumulate knowledge, but to see Christ more clearly, trust Him more deeply, and walk with Him more faithfully. The aim is never to impress, but to edify; never to elevate self, but to exalt Christ.
OUR MISSION GOALS FOR YOU:
ONE
Understand the great storyline of Scripture, from creation to new creation, through the lens of God's covenantal faithfulness.
TWO
Grow in confidence in God's Word, knowing not only what the Bible says but why it can be trusted without reservation in every season of life
THREE
Be rooted in sound doctrine, the kind of theological depth that holds firm under suffering, temptation, and the pressures of a confused age.
FOUR
See Christ more clearly in all of Scripture, finding Him as the center, the substance, and the goal of the entire biblical narrative.
HOME AND HEART
Family — The First and Primary Ministry
Since 1996, I have been joyfully married to my beloved wife, Genea Nichols, my partner in ministry, my closest companion, and my greatest earthly joy. She has been a steadfast source of encouragement, wisdom, and faithfulness through every season of our life together, and I am deeply grateful to God for the gift of her presence and partnership. The Lord has graciously blessed us with five children and one grandchild, each one a living testimony to His goodness and grace.
I am convinced that a pastor's life must adorn the doctrine he proclaims (Titus 2:10). Family and ministry are deeply intertwined, not in competition but in concert. By God's grace, I seek to shepherd both my household and Christ's church with integrity, knowing that the home is the first and most important congregation a pastor is given to lead. What happens around my table matters as much to God as what happens behind my pulpit.
Outside the study and the pulpit, my life is anchored in the simple, profound rhythms of family, conversation over meals, prayers at bedtime, seasons of joy and sorrow shared together. These are not distractions from ministry; they are among its richest expressions.
A HEART FOR THE CHURCH
At the heart of everything I do is a love for the local church. Christ died for His church, and He continues to sanctify her by His Word (Ephesians 5:25–26). My prayer is that through preaching, teaching, and writing, God would be pleased to strengthen His people, guard the truth, and glorify His Son in every generation. I do not minister out of personal ambition but out of a debt of grace, the grace of a Savior who found me, saved me, and called me to serve His people.
"For we do not preach ourselves but Christ Jesus as Lord,
and ourselves as your bond-servants for Jesus' sake."
2 Corinthians 4:5
I am always glad to connect with fellow believers, pastors, students, and anyone seeking to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. Whether you have a question about the ministry, want to explore the teaching resources, or simply want to reach out, please do not hesitate.
